Self Portrait

MYKOLA NEDILKO was born in Ukraine in 1902.  He studied with F. Krychevsky, M. Boychuk and L. Kramarenko, and graduated from the Ukrainian Arts Institute of Kiev in 1928.

When Ukrainian artists were subjected to socialist realism, M. Nedilko came in conflict with the Soviet regime because of his formalist art style.  Thereafter, he worked as a set designer and painter with the State Opera and Musical Comedy Theatre in Kiev.  The outbreak of World War II profoundly changed Nedilko's life.  Nedilko was sent from Kiev to Lviv.  At that time he painted landscapes which attracted the attention of art critics.  In 1941-44, as a member of the Union of Ukrainian Artists, M. Nedilko held several successful art exhibitions and established himself as one of the most prominent contemporary Ukrainian post-impressionist landscape artists.

After spending a brief period in Germany, he emigrated to Argentina.  In 1961 he moved to New York, where he lived and painted until his death in 1979.

Mykola Nedilko is one of the most eminent contemporary Ukrainian landscape artists.  He exhibited an exceptionally broad spectrum of colors and a unique depiction of nature.  His works are characterized by his individualistic post-impressionist approach, with distinct features of Ukrainian lyricism.
